Main tasks
1. Implementation Arrangement
The video production consultant takes on an implementing and technical role. While Helvetas Laos is in charge of scripting and designing the content of the video, the consultant actively supports the process as technical expert, providing valuable inputs on technical feasibility and creative ideas to make the complex topic (systemic change) understandable to the broader audience. Furthermore, the consultant is responsible for the technical part during filming, such as lighting, background etc.
The consultant works closely with Helvetas and ensures open, transparent communication and coordination.
The consultancy will be implemented over a total period of 4 months, from May 2026 to August 2026 with a pre-defined number of total days within this period.
The consultant will be based in Vientiane but will also be travelling to project locations across Laos in order to film.
2. Tasks
Pre-Production
· Support Helvetas in coming up with a detailed video script.
· Support the search for and review of pre-existing visual material from the projects that could be used instead of having to film new clips.
· Help organize and coordinate filming (when, where, with whom?)
Production
· Film introduction interview with Helvetas Laos Country Director.
· Conduct and film 3 main interviews in Lao language. Interviewees are determined and contacted by Helvetas.
· Film project activities that illustrate Helvetas’ systemic approach. Activities to be filmed are determined together with Helvetas. Emphasis on capturing real, unstaged moments of independent actors.
· Potentially film interviews with project beneficiaries. Necessity will be determined during the drafting of the video script.
· Ensure that consent of persons shown in the film is obtained
Post-Production
· Edit the filmed videos and pre-existing videos to create a high-quality final master video.
· Include short text-based identifiers for the videos (e.g. farmer group in Phongsaly) and interviewee information (name, position, institution).
· Create subtitles in English when people speak Lao and Lao subtitles for English speaker.
· If necessary, produce infographics (to be discussed during drafting of video script)
Create a shorter version of the video to post on social media (about 1 min).
Qualifications
Institutional / Professional Experience
· At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience in professional video production, documentary filmmaking, or advocacy/communication campaigns.
· Proven experience producing social impact, development, or advocacy videos.
· Prior experience working with development projects is a strong advantage.
· Demonstrated capacity to manage the full production cycle, including pre-production, filming, post-production, and delivery of high-quality outputs.
Technical Capacity
· Ability to produce high-quality video and audio outputs that meet broadcast or professional digital standards.
· Demonstrated ability to work with non-professional actors, community members, local authorities, and project stakeholders in a respectful and ethical manner.
· Capacity to produce videos in Lao language, with subtitles in English and vis-versa.
· Access to appropriate filming, sound, lighting, and post-production equipment and software.
Contextual and Ethical Competence
· Strong understanding of cultural sensitivities in Lao PDR, particularly when working with rural communities, ethnic groups, women, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable populations.
· Ability to ensure ethical storytelling, including informed consent, respectful representation, and safeguarding of participants.
Languages
- Fluent in Lao
· Good speaking and writing in English
