CRS’ relief and development work is accomplished through programs of emergency response, HIV, health, agriculture, education, microfinance and peacebuilding.
CRS has worked in Laos since 1994 in school feeding, literacy, inclusive education, and nutrition programming. Since 2012, CRS has served over 25 million meals in schools in Savannakhet province through USDA-funded McGovern-Dole school feeding programs, which incorporate early grade literacy development, water, sanitation, and hygiene, school gardens, and community mobilization into a comprehensive package of support to rural schools. CRS is the implementing partner for literacy and WASH activities under a USDA McGovern-Dole school feeding program led by World Food Program (WFP).
Project Background LEAPS III is a 5-year (2021-2026) project funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that is implemented by CRS in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES) and Save the Children. The project is a follow on to the LEAPS I and II projects that have provided over 25 million meals to over 65,000 students in seven districts of Savannakhet province. LEAPS III is implemented in six of the seven districts (Atsaphone, Phalanxay, Sepon, Phin, Vilabouly, and Nong). Key LEAPS III components include school meals; WASH; literacy, implemented by partner Save the Children; early childhood education; and local agriculture to support school meals. All programming will include capacity strengthening activities for government partners and local community members. LEAPS III integrate a focused sustainability plan with project activities handed over to the government at regular intervals over the life of the project.
