Position title:  Communications – Environmental Outreach Coordinator, WWF-Laos

Location:         Vientiane Capital, Laos

The Communications – Environmental Outreach Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing communication strategies and community outreach activities that raise awareness and foster engagement in environmental protection efforts, specifically for project activities within the WWF-Laos Partnerships team. This role supports public education campaigns, stakeholder engagement, content development, and capacity building in collaboration with local communities, government bodies, NGOs, and media partners. The position ensures that communication efforts are inclusive, culturally appropriate, and aligned with the organization’s conservation and development goals.

  1. Major Functions

To design, coordinate, and implement strategic communication and public outreach activities that raise awareness, influence positive environmental behavior, and engage communities, stakeholders, and media in support of conservation and sustainable development goals in Lao PDR.

This includes:

  • Delivering clear, inclusive, and culturally relevant messaging to rural and urban audiences
  • Building trust and participation at the community level
  • Strengthening the visibility and impact of conservation projects through media and stakeholder engagement
  • Ensuring that communication activities support both project implementation and long-term environmental stewardship
  1. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Budgeting, Logistics, and Project Coordination
  • Prepare and manage communication and outreach activity budgets in compliance with donor and organizational procedures.
  • Coordinate procurement of materials, media production, and event logistics; oversee timely implementation of outreach activities.
  • Supervise contractors and consultants (e.g. designers, translators, media teams) to ensure quality and deadlines are met.
  • Collaborate closely with local authorities, government departments, and field teams to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Promote inclusive engagement, especially with ethnic groups and vulnerable populations.
  • Identify risks related to outreach activities and ensure alignment with safeguarding, environmental, and ethical standards.
  • Community Outreach and Environmental Education
  • Design and implement community-based outreach programs in rural and urban settings (e.g. villages, schools, district centers).
  • Organize environmental awareness events such as clean-ups, tree planting, wildlife protection campaigns, and school sessions.
  • Use culturally relevant communication tools and local languages to ensure effective outreach and trust-building.
  • Media and Public Relations
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Lao and regional media outlets (TV, radio, print, online).
  • Prepare press releases, media kits, and organize media site visits to project areas.
  • Monitor local media coverage and help manage the organization’s public image and messaging.

 

  • Strategic Communications & Content Development
  • Develop and implement communications strategies that support project goals and raise public awareness.
  • Create materials (in Lao and English), including posters, videos, social media content, brochures, and radio messages tailored to target audiences.
  • Contribute to online platforms such as Facebook and organizational websites.
  • Document success stories, lessons learned, and community impact for reporting and fundraising.

 

  • Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Coordinate joint outreach activities with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE), local government offices, schools, religious leaders, and youth and women’s groups.
  • Represent the organization at events, workshops, community fairs, and multi-stakeholder meetings.
  • Monitoring, Reporting, and Learning
  • Collect feedback and data to evaluate the effectiveness of communication and outreach activities.
  • Track participation rates, behavioral changes, and media coverage to measure impact.
  • Contribute to donor reports, project updates, internal evaluations, and learning documents.

 

  • Capacity Building
  • Train community leaders, volunteers, youth groups, and staff in communication and environmental education approaches.
  • Support the development of community-led outreach initiatives and locally driven conservation messaging

 

Qualifications Required:

  • Degree in Communications, Environmental Studies, Education, or a related field OR minimum 3 years of experience in communications, outreach, or community engagement—preferably in the conservation or development sector.
  • Fluent in Lao and good command of English (other dialects a plus)
  • Excellent use of the Lao language for communications – especially writing.

Other Qualifications Required:

  • A strong storytelling instinct with the capacity to collect, produce and disseminate impactful stories.
  • Good public communication skills.
  • General knowledge of multimedia content creation, with a basic capacity to use graphic design/illustrations software – including Photoshop and video editing tools
    is strongly desired.
  • Strong interest in conservation and environmental issues and capacity to communicate these through the use of different mediums.
  • Be able to travel to project sites to document field activities and gather multimedia assets for communications purposes.
  • Experience working for an NGO or international organization is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Lao environmental policies and NGO/government coordination processes
  • Ability to work and converse with various teams and stakeholders.
  • Must uphold and actively advocate WWF’s GEDSI, Inclusive Conservation and ESSF policies throughout all project activities
  • Working relationships both internal and external – Report directly to the Strategic Partnership Lead, coordinate on a regular basis with the programme team and engaging with all WWF-Laos staff. Interact with all relevant stakeholders at the community, district, and provincial level. NGOs and business sector on an ad-hoc basis. Including overseeing third party contractors and consultants.
