Mines Advisory Group

Mission Statement

The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is a global humanitarian and advocacy organisation that finds, removes and destroys landmines, cluster munitions and unexploded bombs from places affected by conflict. MAG also provides education programmes, particularly for children, so people can live, work and play as safely as a possible until they clear the land. Our mission is to save lives and build safer futures. We do this by clearing landmines, cluster munitions and other unexploded bombs and by reducing the impact on communities of small arms, light weapons and ammunition.

Program Description

More than two million tons of cluster bombs were dropped on Laos during the second Indochina War (1964-1973), making Laos the most heavily bombed country in history per capita. An estimated 30 per cent of the 270 million sub-munitions dropped on the country did not detonate. Four decades after the war, these deadly items remain a persistent threat and daily reality for thousands of communities across Laos. Contamination by explosive ordnance prevents communities from fully utilising their land, with the main economic activities for rural communities – forestry and agriculture – accounting for a large proportion of unexploded bomb accidents. Development experts have long recognised the links between unexploded bomb contamination and poverty levels in Laos. Our work is focused in Xieng Khouang and Khammouane provinces. We currently have 51 survey and clearance teams, 3 roving teams, 4 communities liaison teams and 3 mechanical asset teams across both provinces destroying an average of 2,000 unexploded bombs each month.   All this is possible with the support of our donors: the U.S. Department of State, the UK Government, the Norwegian Government, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, ARTICLE 22, the Be Good Foundation, Legacy of War Foundation and Ito Supporting Comity.
