ALC
Action with Lao Children
Mission Statement
Action with Lao Children (ALC) is an NGO dedicated to improving the educational environment of children in Laos so they may fulfill the right to create their own future. We have been working mainly in Japan and Laos.
When ALC was founded in 1982, there was only one national library and one bookstore in Vientiane. There were no books available for children in Laos. Even today, children in remote areas have very few opportunities to read and write stories in their daily lives.
Our wish for Lao children is to expand their world and enhance their ability to express their thoughts and ideas, enabling them to choose their own path in life, and lead towards a fair and peaceful global society.
Program Description
Publishing Children Books: Providing wide range of books ALC publishes works in the Lao language by local authors. These may be picture books, folk tales and illustrated dictionaries and Kamishibai (picture-story shows), especially for children. To date, ALC has published 226 titles, more than 921,055copies (1990 to 2020).
Creating an Opportunity for Reading: Support school libraries Aiming to promote reading in local communities, ALC supports to establish libraries at school classrooms with provision of Lao books and trainings for teachers. We have opened more than 329 libraries across Laos (1995-2020).
Capacity Building: Cooperation with Local Community We are working to ensure that the skills developed at ALC reach all corners of Laos. To achieve this goal, ALC is working with District Education and Sports Bureau (DESB), schools and Village Education & Development Committee (VEDC) to develop the self-sustaining management of school libraries and educational environment.
