Mission Statement

Programme Description

1. Khammouane Province Ecotourism development

The program « support for the emergence and consolidation for a sustainable and local management of natural touristic sites in Khammouane » is for the economic development by the involvement of local population in the consolidation and appreciation of their patrimony. The new incomes generated allow the population to stay and improve their life style on their land but also affirm a local development model. The alpine experience regarding rural tourism, notably regarding the geological similarities between those two territories, is the basis for the transfer of skills upon the communities.

The members of the Ecotouristic Association of Konglor-Natane are subject to practical trainings and execute the program day by day. The new activities implemented extend the duration and enhance the quality of the tourists’ stay. Tétraktys and the lao and international partners support them in this process.

The virtuous circle of ecotourism is a synonym for patrimony conservation and a reputation factor for the territories. In Khammouane, the interactions between tourists and rural communities lead to significant benefits: culture, environment and economy happen to be enhanced, maintained and encourage the growing awareness of global issues for the communities as for the visitors.

The program is mainly funded by the French Development Agency and the French Ambassy.

2. Champhone district Ecotourism development

This project is part of the Climate Change Adaptation in Wetlands Areas (CAWA) program implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Xe Champhone site in the province of Savannakhet.

Tétraktys was especially requested to focus on the wetland, to identify local community ecotourism development initiatives and offer a specific support for this area. It falls within economical development actions to find durable alternatives to the existing means of development (such as rice growing) in order to reduce the strong anthropogenic pressure on the wetland.

The project will support the development of planning frameworks for the sector-based CC-resilient livelihood alternatives. These will include the development of ecotourism action plans for the Xe Champhone Wetlands, which will ensure that:

-          Tourism investments and activities are appropriately designed and located and do not place unsustainable pressures on the target ecosystems;

-          Activities that they provide for equitable participation of community members in tourism activities and the receipt of benefits;

-          5 villages will have visitor facilities for ecotourism established benefiting men and women that have been trained.
