Veterinarians without Borders/Vétérinaires sans Frontières – Canada

Mission Statement

Veterinarians without Borders-Canada (VWB/VSF) is a charitable organization whose mission is to work for, and with, communities in need to foster the health of animals, people, and the environments that sustain us. We take a holistic approach which allows us to use animal health as an entry point to improving human and environmental health. We ensure that our projects are multi-disciplinary, participatory, promote equity and are sustainable, going beyond the limits of veterinary science to embed food security, livelihoods, community development and human health as core priorities.

Programme Description

Three programmatic areas are:

  1. Animal health: training of Primary Animal Health Workers (VVWs/PAHWs) and improving village-level animal health
  2. Community livelihoods: using a model farmer and model village approach, supporting alternative livelihoods activities to improve household diets and income, such as poultry production, vegetable production and insect farming
  3. Community and environmental health:  annual rabies vaccination and awareness campaigns, Community Health Days and environmental management; development of Ecohealth training and capacity building (regional level)
