Research company/ Senior consultant for design, data analysis and report writing of a quantitative, cross- sectional RMNCH, Nutrition and Anthropometric  end line survey in Nambak, Pak Ou and Nan districts, Luang Prabang, Lao PDR

September- December 2020


The ANCP project (Reaching the Children Left Behind:   Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition Project) is a four-year project 2017 – 2021 funded by the Department of Foreign Aid and Trade (DFAT) and Save the Children, Australia. The Takeda Maternal and Newborn project (2018 –2020) is funded by the Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda and Save the Children Japan. Both projects are part of part of a broader Primary Health Care program operating in eight districts of northern Lao PDR.  The expected  results are: reduced newborn and infant deaths and a reduction in child stunting, achieved though strengthened quality of RMNCH services and improved community practices for mother and child care and nutrition.

Purpose of consultancy

The research company/ senior consultant will provide full technical support and work in close collaboration with the SCI team, for the design and implementation of the end line ANCP/TAKEDA survey. The company/consultant will be responsible for conducting the survey, data analysis and final endline report writing.  The specific aim of the end line survey is to measure the project indicators and compare significant changes between baseline and endline data.

Key objectives for the end line survey:

  • Characterize basic demographics of the target population;
  • Measure child, infant and neonatal mortality rate
  • Measure nutritional status (WHZ, HAZ, WAZ and MUAC) of children 0-59 months;
  • Describe infant and young child feeding practices for children 0-59 months;
  • Measure prevalence of acute respiratory infection and diarrhoea in children 0-59 months
  • Measure nutritional (MUAC and BMI) status of women of reproductive age
  • Characterize knowledge and practices for care of maternal and child health during pregnancy, delivery, and newborn periods
  • Measure dietary diversity of women and children
  • Document knowledge, beliefs and practices for health seeking behaviours, care of sick children, micronutrient supplements for children 0-59 months and pregnant women
  • Describe access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene
  • Describe access to family planning and use of family planning methods

  • Detailed  breakdown of proposed workplan and days needed and costs to include data collectors and vehicles
  • Draft research protocol /summary of proposed approach
