Room to Read Laos

Mission Statement

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in low-income countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

Programme Description

Since 2000 Room to Read has partnered with local communities throughout the developing world to provide educational resources to the most underserved children. Room to Read has benefited 10 million children across 18,000 government schools in 10 countries around Asia and Africa including Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia. We aim to reach 15 million children by 2020.

Room to Read Laos established in 2005 and currently operates in government schools within Salavan, Savannakhet, Vientiane, Xayabouly, Oudomxay. our Literacy Program is credited for having established the most school libraries in Laos’ government schools and our methods for teaching reading to have the impact we desire through our evaluations; In 2014, 1st grade students under our supported Literacy Program read with fluency and comprehension 12 times better than students in comparison schools based on words per minute. Our local language children’s books are recognized for its high quality which earned Excellent Book Award of the year 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013.

 Room to Read Laos’ Girls’ Education Program offers a comprehensive approach, ensuring girls complete secondary school and graduate with the skills needed to negotiate key life decisions. Since 2007, Room to Read Laos has been supporting 2,396 girls, out of which 220 girls graduated from upper secondary schools and 139 of them (63%) continue higher education and bachelor level.
