CUSO-VSO Lao

Mission Statement

VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.

VSO's high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all.

Programme Description

HOW WE WORK:

The core of CUSOs activities is the development volunteer (Cooperant) sending program, whereby Canadian and south-south Cooperants are placed for two years with partner organisations for capacity building and organizational support. CUSO also implements complementary projects supporting these placements.

IN LAO, CUSO IS FOCUSED ON:

1. COMMUNITY BASED NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT helping communities sustainably control, manage, and preserve their natural resources; and

2. SOCIO-ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY focusing on livelihoods, promoting low external input sustainable agriculture for food security, gender equality and opportunities for youth.

In the 2006-2009 implementing period, key government partners are the Science, Technology and Environment Agency (STEA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF).

CUSO Lao has worked to support fledgling civil society in Laos. For many years CUSO has been housing the Sustainable Agriculture Forum (SAF), a semi-autonomous organization that works under the CUSO umbrella. CUSO Lao has also been a key player in the funding and support (and, until 2005, housing) of the Gender and Development Group (GDG).

At present, CUSO is piloting a Lao volunteer service Huam Jai Asasamak (HJA) which partners rural and ethnic youth with development organisations working in their home districts for one year volunteer internships.
