World Vision International -- Lao PDR

Mission Statement

Our Mission

For every child, life in all its fullness.

Programme Description

About Us

World Vision is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. We serve over 100 million people in 90 countries around the world. We are committed to working with all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender.

History of Working in Lao PDR

World Vision began working in Laos in 1968.  Beginning in 1981, activities gradually increased through support to partner organizations as well as through direct implementation.  In 1991, World Vision formally received official registration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The first Area Development Program (ADP) began in 2005 (with funding from Singapore), growing to 25 ADPs at the end of 2015 (with funding from 8 countries).  Additional resources come from bi-lateral governments (eg. Australian DFAT), multi-lateral donors (eg. the European Union), private foundations (eg. the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation), and corporations (eg. the Ford Motor Company).

Three country strategies have guided World Vision’s work in Laos:  (1) 2008 to 2012; (2) 2013 to 2015, and (3) 2016 to 2020.

Goals and Activities

We work with the government and other partners to achieve transformation in three key areas:

1.      Health - Improve the health status of children and women of reproductive age;

2.      Education - Improve learning outcomes through increased access to quality education; and

3.      Agriculture and Livelihoods - Ensure caregivers and communities are able to provide well for their children.

Activities include maternal, newborn, and child health; nutrition; water and sanitation; early childhood development; primary education; agriculture; and livelihoods support.  Gender and child protection are cross-cutting themes which are embedded in all of World Vision's activities.

 Where We Work

ADPs are multi-sector, rural development programs which focus on capacity building of community groups and other local organizations.  Each ADP covers a single district, targeting the most vulnerable villages and households within the district.  World Vision currently works in 17 districts in five provinces: Luang Prabang, Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, Savanakhet and Champassak. These programs work with over 600 villages, with the total population of 481,017 people, including more than 208,642 children.
