German Red Cross (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz)
The German Red Cross is a member of the global community of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, providing help without discrimination to the victims of conflicts and disasters and others in need, solely based on their level of need. We act in the name of humanity for the lives, health, well-being, protection, peaceful interaction and dignity of all people.
The German Red Cross in Laos is largely funded by the German government (BMZ) and works in close partnership with the Lao Red Cross National Blood Service to support the sustainable development of blood services in terms of coverage, quantity and quality of blood. There is a specific focus on voluntary blood donor motivation, recruitment and retention; infrastructure and equipment; and operational and management capacities.
The current initiative (2015-2017) involves the Lao Red Cross National Blood Transfusion Centre and designated district and provincial services (Kenthao, Parlai and Xienghone in Xaiabouly Province; Houn in Oudomxay Province; Sing in Luang Nantha Province; Pa Oudom and Thonpheung in Bokeo Province; Xiengkhor and Xamtay in Huaphanh Province).
The German Red Cross views the programme as part of a wider and longer engagement with the Lao Red Cross, where there is an agreed need to ensure that blood services keep pace with the ongoing expansion and improved access to health services. Ultimately, the contribution made by the German Red Cross and the German government should be considered as part of this broader vision of a stable, adequately resourced blood service, with appropriate structural features for improved coverage, availability and quality of blood for transfusion, and which contributes towards key targets of sustainable development goals.
