Mission Statement

WCS saves wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature.

Programme Description

WCS began working in Lao PDR in 1980’s surveying wildlife and habitats around the country to assist the government to create Lao PDR’s national protected area system. In the early 1990’s, WCS documented wildlife and habitats in many of the nearly created national protected areas and began supporting the government to train protected area managers, as well as raise awareness about illegal wildlife trade. Over the past decade, WCS has focused its efforts on working in protected areas in the Greater Northern Annamites.

WCS Lao PDR is committed to working in the Greater Northern Annamites of Lao PDR because the area is home to unique wild habitats and endemic species, supports the livelihoods of several million people, and is increasingly threatened by human-induced processes.  WCS Lao PDR’s vision for the Greater Northern Annamites of Lao PDR is that its unique ecosystems thrive indefinitely and are valued by the people of Lao PDR and the world for their biodiversity, natural beauty, and services provided to humanity.

As of December 2013 the WCS implements six projects in partnership with government and local communities.  All project directly relate to our global and country specific missions. These projects center on improving biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, scientific research, improved local governance, wildlife and human health, and illegal wildlife trade.
