Community Learning International

Mission Statement

Community Learning International creates opportunities for disadvantaged individuals, families and communities to work to improve their lives

Programme Description

Community lLarning International (CLI) has been involved in Laos since 1997, operating under a previous name until 2004.  We are a US-registered nonprofit charity, with a volunteer board from the US, Canada, Switzerland and Thailand. Our mission is "To create opportunites for disadvantaged individuals, families and communities to work to improve their lives." Our work is oriented toward rural/remote communities, which means much of what we do benefits ethnic minorities. Our primary focus is educational assistance, both through support for the formal education system and through non-formal education project work. Support for the formal education system includes construction of village schools and high school libraries and dormitories for girls from remote villages. Augmenting the formal system, we operate two Lao Children's Library Boats on the Mekong and Ou Rivers and six Learning Centers in rural district towns that include a library and provide developmental activities for children and youth. We are fortunate to have a number of iNGO and NPA project partners. Our curent MOU with the GOL runs through October, 2014 and we expect to continue beyond, working in Laos indefinitely.
